Abstract:
The shell model is an appealing structure for low-energy nuclear physics, but diagonalization in a full basis can become intractable. An alternative is the generator coordinate method, which selects a set of mean-field-like solutions. I will discuss our recent results, which includes a novel method of angular momentum projection, as well as a new approach to generating the underlying Slater determinants. This latter leads to improved excitation spectra and better matrix elements for neutrinoless double-beta decay.
Biography:
Calvin Johnson received degrees in physics and math from the University of California, Davis, and a Ph.D from the University of Washington. After postdocs at Caltech and Los Alamos, he was a professor first at Louisiana State University, and then San Diego State University, where he has been since 2002.
